Hace tiempo os recomendamos TED-Ed, la división dedicada a Educación de las famosas conferencias de TED. Os animamos a que echéis un vistazo a lo que otros profesionales de la educación tienen que decir sobre múltiples temas. En TED-Ed podéis aprender cosas tan interesantes como la queremos compartir con vosotros hoy a modo de ejemplo, Network Theory by Marc Samet (las animaciones de Darren Rawlings son geniales, by the way). ¡Aprended mucho!

All you need is love

San Valentín es una excusa para que os recomendemos revisar clásicos del romanticismo inglés, ya sea en libro o en peli. Este año os recomendaremos una revisión del clásico romántico de Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre. Se trata de la última adaptación cinematográfica de Cary Fukunaga. Nuestra favorita hasta el momento, con un soberbio señor Rochester interpretado por Michael Fassbender. Los paisajes son espectaculares e inhóspitos y retrata muy bien el ambiente típico del romanticismo trágico y melancólico de las hermanas Brontë. Aprovechad para hablarle a los chicos de este periodo de la literatura inglesa y de como sus autores fueron un referente para romanticismo español, algo más tardío. Habladles del romanticismo gótico, de Shelley, de Byron, de Poe, de las pinturas de Turner, del impresionismo. De cómo autores contemporáneos que conocen bien beben de esos autores, Tim Burton, por ejemplo. Y llevadles un poema de amor ya sea del gran Shakespeare, de Byron, de Poe o simplemente una canción. Los chicos os lo agradecerán.

Y el trailer de la peli...

No es igual enseñar que educar

A raíz de las reflexiones que hacía este profe en el programa de Salvados del domingo, nos apetecía hacer una pequeña reflexión sobre "educar y enseñar". Para muchos padres lo de educar es casi una obligación exclusiva de la escuela, delegando cualquier responsabilidad en los docentes, en el cole, en definitiva, en el sistema educativo. Sin embargo, entendemos que esta gran tarea de educar tiene que desempeñarla la familia desde que los niños nacen, como bien apunta Marc en esta entrevista. Deben transmitirles unos valores que sentarán las bases de su comportamiento en sociedad, de su tolerancia. 
Entiendo, por otro lado, que "enseñar" es transmitir una serie de conocimientos por regla general fijados y por niveles, que se evalúan según unos criterios determinados y cuya responsabilidad recae sobre los docentes fundamentalmente. Las diferencias entre enseñar y educar son muchas y sería conveniente tenerlo en cuenta, pero ¿pueden separarse? 

Si queremos que algo cambie, que tengamos una "educación" de calidad, no hay que señalar tanto al culpable o culpables, si no reconocer que es un asunto de extrema importancia y buscar la colaboración. Si algo caracteriza a este país es la queja y la falta de entendimiento. En todo somos de negro o blanco y la escala de grises es la que no encuentra su sitio. Somos de uno o de otro. En educación tenemos que ser todos de uno y no caben disputas ni culpables porque todos lo somos. Desde los padres que olvidan educar y delegan, los docentes que sólo enseñan y no educan, de los políticos, de la sociedad que alimenta la desidia con quejiqueos. Quien siembra recoge. Si educamos, podremos enseñar.

Sobre MOOCs

De un tiempo a esta parte los MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) cada vez se han hecho más importante y se ha dejado un poquito de lado la idea de tener un título para centrarse en aprender y en aprender de las universidades más prestigiosas y compartir este proceso de aprendizaje con compañeros de todos los países. Todo empezó con el OCW (Open Course Ware) del MIT  del que ya os hablamos en el blog hace tiempo. Nosotros sólo le vemos ventajas. Hace  menos de un mes que terminamos un curso de 9 semanas en Stanford y la experiencia ha sido fantástica. Al ser docentes, lo que más nos ha gustado es ver cómo se trabaja en otros países, y la colaboración en equipo de los proyectos, el verdadero trabajo en equipo. Educación, tecnología e idiomas trabajando juntas. El lunes empezamos otros dos en la University of Edinburgh y en Georgia Techological Institute sobre e-learning. Estamos entusiasmados. Algunos los encontraréis en coursera o podéis simplemente buscar en las universidades directamente, como hicimos con el curso de Stanford.

1. Udemy Free Courses – Udemy, “recently announced a new Faculty Project, in which award-winning professors from universities like Dartmouth, the University of Virginia and Northwestern offer free online courses.

2. ITunesU Free Courses – Apple’s free app “gives students access to all the materials for courses in a single place. Right in the app, they can play video or audio lectures. Read books and view presentations.”

3. Stanford Free Courses -  From Quantum Mechanics to The Future of the Internet, Stanford offers a variety of free courses.  Stanford’s – Introduction to Artificial Intelligence was highly successful.

4. UC Berkeley Free Courses – From General Biology to Human Emotion, Berkley offers a variety of courses.  Check out:  Berkeley Webcasts and Berkeley RSS Feeds.

5. MIT Free Courses – Check out MIT’s RSS MOOC feed.  Also see:  MIT’s Open Courseware.

6. Duke Free Courses – Duke offers a variety of courses on ITunesU.

7. Harvard Free Courses – From Computer Science to Shakespeare, students may now get a free Harvard education. Courses run in the fall, spring, or intensive January session. No application is required.

8. UCLA Free Courses – Check out free courses such as their writing program that offers over 220 online writing courses each year.

9. Yale Free Courses – At Open Yale, the school offers “free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University.

Separated by a Common Language?

Cuando aprendemos inglés, uno se decanta (en la medida de sus habilidades) por una variedad del inglés. Acento americano o británico principalmente, pero también irlandés, escocés o australiano, canadiense o sudafricano. Depende de dónde hayamos estudiado, de nuestros profes y de los métodos que hayamos utilizado. Poco a poco los métodos y textos incluyen material de todos los acentos y variedades y si no, la red nos los pone en bandeja en youtube, en podcasts, en mil sitios. Ya no es un problema la práctica de determinados acentos. Si uno ha estado acostumbrado al acento RP de Inglaterra, que es lo que predomina en los textos y material de EFL en Europa, en cuanto se le mete a un hablante americano en una listening de las de "examen", se echa a temblar. Con la globalización y la extensión e influencia de la cultura de los EEUU en la europea, las características del inglés norteamericano nos son cada vez más familiares y el entendimiento entre británicos y americanos no es tan complejo a pesar de las diferencias en pronunciación, grafías, etc. Os preguntaréis entonces por qué incido en la diferencia, pues bien, como bien dice al final de esta infografía: "The most important point to remember is cosistency. Many ESL speakers find they have a natural preference for one or the other". Si prefieres un acento,  cíñete a ese acento, sé coherente. Si te sientes mejor con la pronunciación más relajada de los estadounidenses, perfecto. También es inglés. Huye de la dictadura del RP (Received Pronunciation) English. Eso sí, sé consciente de las diferencias en spelling o de vocabulario. No sabes menos inglés porque no suenes British ;-)

Duolingo

Nos topamos con Duolingo gracias a una conferencia de TED que nos remitió un amigo. Duolingo es un servicio gratuito que te ayuda a aprender lenguas extranjeras totalmente gratis mientras que, simultáneamente, ayudas a traducir contenido real de Internet. Aquí os dejamos un vídeo en el que sus autores, un grupo de expertos informáticos y de idiomas, nos explican cómo funciona. Contadnos que os parece.
